When you are in a relationship, you need to discuss things. And ONE of the MOST IMPORTANT things to discuss is money, more importantly your finances as a couple or if you single with yourself. So DON’T avoid the discussion about money….
Did you know money is one of the most common source of fighting among couples and is a leading cause of stress?
Money and stress seem to go hand in hand with life and this happens whether you’re in a relationship or not. We all have probably know or have felt the stress of wondering how we will pay of everything or something.
This stress can affect your body, thoughts & feelings, and your behavior. It affects your very life. One thing to help with this stress is discussing your finances as a couple or if your single by yourself (yes it will help, admit it to yourself!). Now I am not saying this will solve your money problems but discussing it will help you get on the same page.
So don’t avoid the discussion!!
WHAT TO DISCUSS?
There are many things to discuss and I am going to talk about a couple of them.
- What are your goals? – Like STEP 1 in my build a financial foundation, you need to know your goals. And if you’re a couple, this is a very important step in working together. Your goals could be something simple or something you dream about, write it down so you can see if often.
- What is your budget? – This is the most important step! And you can read more about creating a budget and using a budget in Build a Foundation. This is where as a couple you will probably have to sacrifice something you want and your partner will need to do the same. But make sure you both agree with it and that it will only help you reach your goals.
- Maybe you need to cut your eating out fund, cut cable completely, find a different insurance plan, cut your phone bill in half, start using the cash system; whatever it is agreed and move forward.
- DO IT! – This one sounds simple but it can be really hard. Remind yourself of your goal and it will make it easier.
Also adjust the budget if you need to but make sure you agree on it. Maybe you find you don’t spend as much on something, you could do without that one thing, or maybe you need to budget more for something.
DOES THIS ONLY APPLY IF I AM IN A RELATIONSHIP?
NO!!! You need to be honest with yourself and take the time to look at where you are at? And where you want to be? Don’t avoid examining your life RIGHT NOW! Only you can change your life… so change it.
Don’t Avoid the Discussion about money
When you discuss your money and everyone is working together on achieving a goal. You will find that you will spend less, money will be easier to talk about, and one day you will reach that goal.
I am not saying you will have NO more fights about money but you will have less because you are working together as a team. You will also feel less stress.
Try it! Talk about your money, make the changes needed, and do it!
